Huge Growth This Year in Wearables
This has been a huge year for wearables. New data from Canalys finds that the overall wearable band market grew 684% during the first half of 2014 year-over-year. The firm segmented the bands into two device types: "basic" and "smart." In the former category, the Fitbit and Jawbone took first and second place for number of shipments. Among "smart" wearable bands, Samsung's numerous Gear devices had a clear edge. Once Apple's rumored iWatch hits the stores, we'll probably see an even more pronounced ramp up of wearable demand. We believe that Apple may be the missing ingredient needed for wearables to truly hit the mainstream.
